INSITU

This term refers to below the ground surface. Contamination from leaking underground storage tanks is an example. To treat this, the microbes and nutrient must reach the contaminant or else nothing will happen. A popular technique is to make inoculations through vertical injection points, drilled to the depth of the contaminated soil. Spacing of the inoculation borings is dependant on soil characteristics but a good average is to drill at 6 foot centers, aiming for good horizontal soaking of the soil. The diameter of the bore holes can vary but a 2 inch hole is adequate. On drill extraction, lining the bore holes with slotted PVC will assure a permanent inoculation point throughout the project.

EXSITU

This term refers to contaminated soil on the surface. If space permits, spreading the soil 18 inches to 24 inches deep will allow oxygen to penetrate the soil. After mixing the microbes and nutrient with water (see mixing instructions), this solution can then be applied to the site by spraying or any other method.

It is suggested that the soil be turned every 2-4 weeks with appropriate equipment such as a back hoe. And moisture levels should be maintained near 20 %. Frequent applications will expedite the clean up process.
